Job Purpose
The Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the implementation of disaster risk reduction activities within target communities. The primary focus of this role is to assist in enhancing community resilience and preparedness against natural and man-made hazards. The DRR Assistant works closely with the DRR Officer to engage with community members, conduct training sessions, and support the monitoring and evaluation of DRR initiatives. This position is instrumental in fostering community awareness, participation, and capacity building, ensuring that local populations are better equipped to mitigate and respond to potential disasters.
Key Responsibilities
Support in Program Implementation
Work with DRR Officer to conduct comprehensive community risk assessments and vulnerability analyses to identify key hazards and at-risk populations;
Support the development and implementation of community-based disaster risk reduction plans, ensuring community involvement and ownership;
Actively participate in organizing and conducting training sessions and workshops on DRR concepts, early warning systems, and emergency preparedness for community members.
Community Engagement
Engage with community members, leaders, and local authorities to raise awareness about disaster risks, mitigation measures, and the importance of preparedness;
Organise and facilitate community meetings, focus group discussions, training sessions, and awareness campaigns related to DRR;
Foster strong relationships with community stakeholders to encourage their active participation in DRR initiatives.
Monitoring and Reporting
Support the monitoring and evaluation of DRR activities by assisting in data collection, data entry, and analysis to track progress and impact;
Participate in preparing detailed progress reports, documenting project activities, outcomes, challenges, and lessons learned;
Contribute to the development and maintenance of project databases and information systems for accurate record-keeping and reporting.
Administrative Support
Provide administrative support for project activities, including logistics coordination, scheduling meetings and events, and maintaining project documentation;
Maintain accurate records of project expenses, assist in budget monitoring, and ensure compliance with financial procedures;
Assist in the procurement of materials and supplies needed for DRR activities, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
Capacity Building
Assist in developing and adapting training materials, manuals, and tools for community members, local authorities, and partners, tailored to local needs and contexts;
Support capacity-building efforts by providing logistical and technical support during training sessions and workshops;
Encourage and facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices in disaster risk management among community groups and stakeholders.
Qualifications
Diploma in Disaster Management, Environmental Science, Social Sciences, or a related field, or equivalent experience;
At least 1-2 years of experience in disaster risk reduction, community development, or related fields. Experience working in humanitarian settings is an advantage;
Basic understanding of DRR concepts and community-based approaches. Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to engage effectively with diverse community groups and stakeholders;
Proficiency in Portuguese and English is preferred. Knowledge of local languages is an advantage;
Ability to work effectively in a team, under pressure, and in challenging environments;
Willingness to travel frequently to project sites within the province;
Basic computer skills, including MS Office.
